Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary

Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary is a coastal wildlife destination in Port Adelaide, about 20 minutes from Adelaide city. Entry is free, and the sanctuary can be explored from several access points, including Garden Island, St Kilda, Snowdens Beach, Outer Harbour and North Haven marina. Rather than a conventional attraction with a single entrance or set tour, it is a broad marine park where the shoreline, waterways and surrounding port landscape form the experience.

Wild bottlenose dolphins use the sanctuary throughout the year to feed, play, socialise and raise their calves. The Anna-Rennie Loop Path, a 3.5-kilometre circuit around Port Adelaide’s Inner Harbour, is identified as a good land-based location, while elevated points around the waterfront can offer views over the Inner Port. Calm days with light winds are generally the most suitable for spotting dolphins at the surface. Visitors are asked not to feed or harass them, and boats must follow distance rules around dolphins, particularly when a calf or injured animal is present.

The sanctuary’s setting is a major part of its appeal. Its waterways include a 10,000-year-old mangrove forest, seagrass, saltmarsh, tidal flats and tidal creeks, creating habitat for marine life and juvenile fish. Depending on the season and location, visitors may also see stingrays, long-nosed fur seals, Australian sea lions and a wide range of birds, including pelicans, cormorants, terns, oystercatchers and ospreys. The northern coastal habitat connects with the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary, which is an important stop for migratory shorebirds. Kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding provide a closer look at the mangroves, creeks and ships’ graveyards, with tours and hire available from listed operators.

There is also a strong cultural and historical dimension. The sanctuary forms part of South Australia’s largest port and includes Aboriginal and European places of interest. The area holds continuing significance for the Kaurna People, with traditional stories including The Wanderings of Tjirbruke connected to the landscape.
