Anstey Hill Lookout

Anstey Hill Lookout sits within Anstey Hill Recreation Park, about 16 kilometres north-east of Adelaide. It is a useful choice when you want a walk with views, local history and the chance to see native wildlife in one visit. Entry to the park is free, and access is available from gates off North East Road, Perseverance Road and Range Road South. Public transport is also available from Adelaide city centre.

There is no single sightseeing route to the lookout. Visitors can build a walk from Ellis Cottage towards the ridgeline using the park’s network of designated tracks. The Geological Hike is a one-kilometre return trail that takes in views across Adelaide and the Gun Emplacement, while the Wildflower Wander offers views towards the Adelaide Plains and Gulf St Vincent. The longer trails include the 6.2-kilometre Yellow-tail Loop, which passes Newman’s Nursery ruins, and the 3.15-kilometre Pink Gum Loop, a more demanding route with loose rocks in sections. Walkers should expect some steep, uneven and naturally rocky surfaces on the harder tracks.

The surrounding recreation park has a distinctly open, bushland character, with ridgetops, gullies, old quarry areas and shared-use trails. Eight mountain-bike trails range from easy to advanced, and the wider network includes about 25 kilometres of shared walking and cycling tracks. Families and visitors seeking a gentler outing can start with the 650-metre Little Quarry Loop, which has a mostly level, hard-packed gravel surface and is suitable for prams and people with limited mobility. Three accessible picnic areas sit around this loop, with parking and toilets available at Gate 1 near Ellis Cottage.

Anstey Hill’s appeal also comes from what surrounds the trails. The park protects plant communities that were once widespread across the Adelaide Plains and Mount Lofty Ranges, including pink gum and long-leaf box woodlands. Depending on the season, visitors may see wildflowers such as spider-orchids and wax-lip orchids, while birdlife, western grey kangaroos, koalas, reptiles and frogs are among the local wildlife. Historic features include the restored Ellis Cottage, Rump’s Bakehouse, quarry sites and the extensive remains of Newman’s Nursery, one of Adelaide’s early commercial nurseries. The park is on Kaurna Country and remains culturally significant.

Anstey Hill Lookout suits solo walkers, families, small groups, hikers and mountain-bike riders, with routes that range from an accessible short loop to more challenging trails. Dogs are welcome on leads of no more than two metres and must stay on designated trails. The park is open daily, although vehicle gates have set daily access times and closures can apply during dangerous fire conditions, so checking current conditions before visiting is important.
