Brownhill Creek Recreation Park

Brownhill Creek Recreation Park is a bushland escape in Mitcham, around 8km from Adelaide. Its narrow creek runs through a steep-sided valley lined with river red gums, including trees more than 300 years old. Blue gum woodland covers the slopes, while sections of rare grey box grassy woodland add to the park’s variety. The 51-hectare reserve offers a peaceful change of pace without taking you far from the city.

There are several ways to explore the park. The grade 3 Wirraparinga Trail takes about 45 minutes each way and covers 2.3km through shaded areas, old European trees and grey box woodland. The 3km Shared Use Trail takes about an hour each way and is suitable for walking, cycling or horse riding. Horses can also use sealed roads and the park includes a fenced horse exercise area, while mountain bikes are permitted on public roads and designated cycling trails. Dogs are welcome, provided they remain under control and on a lead no longer than two metres.

The park has shaded picnic areas at Mitcham Lions Club and Seven Pines, making it a practical choice for a family outing or a relaxed lunch outdoors. It also suits solo walkers, birdwatchers and visitors wanting a short nature break close to Adelaide. The creek valley acts as a wildlife corridor for more than 40 species of birds and mammals. Kookaburras, bats, possums, water rats, frogs, eastern brown snakes and occasional koalas are among the species recorded, and the park provides habitat for the nationally endangered southern brown bandicoot.

Brownhill Creek has a significant history. The area was a camping, hunting and gathering ground for the Kaurna people, who called it Wirraparinga, meaning scrub and camping place. European settlement followed in the 1830s, with agriculture, market gardening and quarrying becoming important local industries. Remnants of manure storage pits and a colonial keystone arch bridge remain in the park. Visitors can also stay at the Brownhill Creek Tourist Park, which offers grassed camping sites and three-bedroom villas with cooking facilities. Entry is free, although the park can close during Catastrophic Fire Danger and may close during Extreme Fire Danger, so checking conditions before visiting is important.
