Cathedral Hotel

Cathedral Hotel is a heritage-listed pub on Kermode Street in North Adelaide, with a long connection to the area. Its origins reach back to the Scotch Thistle Hotel, which was associated with William Field and hosted early deliberations of Adelaide’s recreated Municipal Corporation in 1852. The licence moved to the present site in 1881, and the venue adopted the Cathedral Hotel name in 1925. Historical features remain part of the building, giving the pub a sense of place beyond its role as a local dining and drinking venue.

The hotel’s current layout includes two distinct bars, a large dining room and an alfresco area facing Kermode Street. A recent refurbishment has restored original elements while introducing carefully considered modern design details, creating a setting that balances heritage character with a contemporary feel. Its position near St Peter’s Cathedral, Adelaide Oval, the Memorial Hospital and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital also makes it a practical meeting point in southern North Adelaide.

Food is centred on modern Australian cooking, with the menu described as combining traditional and contemporary influences. The kitchen places emphasis on fresh, local produce and suppliers associated with ethical farming and harvesting practices. The hotel also says it is working to reduce its environmental impact by avoiding plastics and other non-biodegradable products. Daily specials provide an option for something different, while the $20 Lunch Specials offer smaller-portioned meals during lunch hours with a complimentary Schweppes soft drink. The kitchen operates from 11:30am to 8:30pm, Monday to Saturday, and pre-ordering is encouraged for diners with limited lunch breaks.

Drinks are another focus, particularly the wine list. It brings together familiar styles, newer varietals and boutique producers, with a strong emphasis on South Australian wine regions. The list includes Barry family, Hentley Farm and Wirra Wirra, alongside selected wines from elsewhere. With separate bars, a dining room and outdoor seating, the Cathedral Hotel can work for a casual drink, a lunch break or a meal shared in a group, while its historic setting and central North Adelaide location give it added interest for visitors exploring the surrounding landmarks.
