Fort Glanville

Fort Glanville in Semaphore, Adelaide, offers a close look at one of South Australia’s significant colonial defence sites. Built between 1878 and 1880, the crescent-shaped earthwork was designed to protect the colony from sea-based threats and remains largely unaltered. Its defensive layout includes a ditch, caponier, rear defence wall, barracks and stockade, giving visitors a tangible sense of how the fort was planned and used.

The experience is centred on guided tours and living-history events. On open days, members of the Fort Glanville Historical Association present military drills, cannon and carbine firing, and a mock traditional military parade. The fort’s small museum adds context with war relics, military equipment and historic photographs. Visitors can also see the recreated southern 10-inch gun carriage and loading system, along with the magazine, loading gallery and other features that explain how the fort’s artillery operated.

Fort Glanville’s story extends beyond its active military years. It was later used as a military detention centre, depression-era accommodation, a Boy Scout headquarters and a caravan park before its heritage value was recognised in the 1970s. Restoration began after the caravan park was moved and continues today, with the site now managed as Fort Glanville Conservation Park. The historical association plays a central role in bringing the site’s past to life and also welcomes volunteers interested in military history or community involvement.

The fort is open to the public for re-enactments on the third Sunday of the month from September to May, from 1pm to 4.30pm. Entry includes a guided tour and re-enactment, with adult, child, concession and family tickets available. Tuesday tours are also offered, and group tours can be arranged; bookings are preferred, with bookings required for groups of 10 or more. It suits families, history enthusiasts, school or community groups, and anyone wanting a structured heritage visit near Adelaide. There are toilets and public transport access, but no specific bushwalking trails, and dogs are not permitted in the park apart from appropriately managed assistance dogs.
