Hahndorf Academy

Hahndorf Academy brings together contemporary art, local history, creative learning and a shop supporting South Australian artists and makers. It occupies a heritage building on Hahndorf’s Main Street, where the character of the 19th-century setting forms part of the visit. The gallery presents a rotating exhibition program featuring established and emerging artists from local, national and international backgrounds, with work spanning different media and styles.

The museum adds another layer to the experience, sharing artefacts and stories connected with First Nations people, German settlers and early village life. The Academy’s history is substantial: it began as a school in 1857, later became a boarding school and Lutheran college, and was subsequently used as a hospital, nursing home, council offices and other community facilities. After periods of neglect and proposed demolition, the building was restored and reopened as the Hahndorf Academy Galleries and German Folk Museum in 1967. Today, it continues under the Hahndorf Academy Foundation and is described by the venue as one of South Australia’s largest regional art galleries.

For visitors who want to do more than look around, the Academy runs creative workshops and events, including ceramics classes for children, teenagers, beginners and intermediate learners. Introduction to Ceramics focuses on hand-built vessels using coil and slab construction, while Contemporary Ceramics covers wheel-thrown forms, glazes and surface treatments. The Ceramics After School programme is aimed at children aged 7 to 16. These classes make the venue a practical option for families, developing artists and anyone interested in learning within a gallery setting.

The Academy suits a solo cultural visit, a thoughtful stop while exploring Hahndorf, or a shared outing for visitors interested in art, migration history and the Adelaide Hills. Its shop offers another way to engage with the local creative community, with South Australian artists and makers represented. The venue acknowledges that it stands on bUkatila, the shared country of the Peramangk and Kaurna peoples, and pays respect to their Elders past and living. Hahndorf Academy is listed as open daily from 10am to 5pm, at 68 Main Street, around 30 minutes south-east of Adelaide.
