Lartelare Park

Lartelare Park sits beside the Port Waterfront redevelopment in Port Adelaide and combines open park space with a strong sense of place. The site includes a river setting, indigenous plantings, a shelter, public and community art, and a monument, with free parking and public transport access listed among its features. On-street and disabled parking are available near the Wirra Drive entrance in New Port.

The reserve is also a significant Aboriginal heritage site connected with Lartelare, also known as Rebecca Spender. A Kaurna woman of full descent, she was born in a wurley on the Glanville waterfront in 1851 and became an elder known as the Keeper of the Black Swan. The site records her connection to the Port River and her life there until 1890, when her family moved to Port McLeay as the new colony’s industry and population expanded.

This is a worthwhile stop for visitors interested in Kaurna history, local heritage and the changing Port waterfront, as well as anyone looking for a park with gardens, art and a place to pause beside the river.
