Palm House

Palm House is a heritage glasshouse within Adelaide Botanic Garden, offering a close look at Victorian architecture, botanical collections and contemporary glass art in one compact attraction. Imported from Bremen, Germany, in 1875, the building is an exceptionally preserved example of glasshouse design and is thought to be the only one of its kind still in existence. Its hanging glass walls were an advanced engineering feature for the time, with the structure’s survival attributed in part to its sophisticated construction and Adelaide’s dry climate.

Designed by German architect Gustav Runge, Palm House has also had a long conservation history. It closed in 1986 after corrosion affected its iron glazing bars, then underwent a full restoration following a conservation study and public appeal. Further work in 2018 addressed salt damp and corrosion, while plants were pruned to improve light levels inside. The heritage-listed building reopened after eight months, allowing visitors to experience the restored space alongside its living collection.

Inside, the focus is on plants from Madagascar, selected for their preference for warm, dry conditions. The collection connects the island’s ancient botanical history with Australia’s own origins in Gondwana, while also highlighting plants that are threatened or endangered in their natural habitats. This gives the visit more depth than a simple glasshouse walk: visitors can appreciate the display while learning about plant conservation and the relationship between the building’s environment and its collection.

A permanent glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly adds a striking contemporary element to the historic interior. Glacier Ice and Lapis Chandelier was created specifically for Palm House and became a permanent fixture in 2024 through a philanthropic gift from Dr Pamela Wall OAM. The contrast between the Victorian structure, Madagascar plants and Chihuly’s glasswork makes this a worthwhile stop for architecture and design enthusiasts, garden visitors, solo explorers and couples looking for a visually distinctive place to visit in Adelaide CBD. It also suits groups and families interested in combining a botanical outing with a brief history lesson. Palm House is open daily, from 10am to 5pm between October and March, and from 10am to 4pm between April and September.
