Penfold Park

Penfold Park is a spacious recreational reserve at 591 The Parade, Magill, within the City of Burnside in Adelaide. Its large grassed and landscaped areas create room for play, informal outings and relaxation, while a secluded setting, bench seats, a rotunda and BBQ facilities make it suitable for families, small groups or a quiet solo visit. Public toilets, including disabled access, disabled parking and ample off-street parking add practical convenience.

Families have two playgrounds to choose from. The east playground includes swings, toddler swings, spring-mounted play equipment, a double flying fox and a modular structure with slides, climbing nets, a rock-climbing wall and balance elements. Mulch provides the soft-fall surface, with a shade structure covering more than 60 per cent of the playground. The west playground has a modular unit with a slide, cubby, ladder and bridge, and sits beside two tennis courts and a basketball hoop. Tree shade is available there at times.

The park also supports a broad range of casual and organised sport. Alongside the basketball hoop, there are two netball courts, four pickleball courts and two tennis courts. Pickleball players need to bring their own nets, while line marking is provided. Tennis court bookings are required for exclusive use or to reserve a particular time, and fees apply. The tennis courts are described as being in fair condition, with car parking about 100 metres away. These facilities give the park appeal for active groups as well as visitors looking for open space rather than a formal attraction.

Penfold Park also has a distinct local connection. An old wine press from the Penfold Winery is displayed in the grounds, linking the reserve to Christopher Rawson Penfold, who founded the winery and was the first Chairman of the Burnside District Council in 1856. That historical detail adds interest to an otherwise straightforward community park, making the visit more than just a playground or sports stop. It is a practical choice for families, recreational players and anyone wanting a leafy, open-air setting in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs.
