Port Adelaide Lighthouse

Port Adelaide Lighthouse offers a seasonal experience that combines the South Australian Maritime Museum with a guided visit to one of the area’s best-known maritime landmarks. The tour begins inside the museum, where visitors can explore collections and exhibitions while learning about South Australia’s maritime history before heading outside with a guide.

The group then walks towards the wharf, passing a series of state heritage-listed buildings and taking in the historic character of Port Adelaide. The lighthouse was first lit in 1869, and the tour includes climbing its 83 steps to see the lantern mechanism operating and take in views across the river and Port Adelaide. After the guided component, visitors can return to the museum and continue exploring at their own pace.

Tours are kept small, with a maximum of 10 people, allowing more opportunity to engage with the guide. The experience takes about 90 minutes and suits visitors interested in local history, maritime heritage, architecture and waterfront stories. It could work well for a small group, a solo visitor or an outing with older children, but it is not suitable for children under five.

This is an experience to plan around rather than a drop-in lighthouse visit: tours operate seasonally, and upcoming schedules should be checked before booking. Participants need to be comfortable with steep stairs, confined areas and heights, and everyone must sign a health and safety waiver. Poor weather may lead to a rescheduled tour, with tickets eligible for reissue or refund in that circumstance.
