The Bradman Collection

The Bradman Collection offers a focused look at the life and cricket career of Sir Donald Bradman, whose personal memorabilia is displayed in a purpose-built museum within Adelaide Oval’s Riverbank Stand. On loan from the State Library of South Australia, the collection covers the period from 1927 to 1977 and brings together objects connected with Bradman’s playing days and public life. It is a fitting location for an exhibition dedicated to an Australian sporting figure who made Adelaide his home.

The display includes personal items such as cricket bats, balls, trophies and clothing, giving visitors more than a straightforward sporting history. There is also footage of Bradman to watch in the theatrette, along with an interactive museum experience where visitors can test their own skills. Together, these elements make the collection accessible whether you already know Bradman’s story or are discovering it for the first time.

The exhibition’s history is closely tied to Adelaide Oval. Bradman wanted the collection to find a home at the ground, and that wish was realised in 2008, the centenary of his birth. The South Australian Cricket Association is now custodian of the collection, working with the Premier’s Department, the State Library and the Bradman family. The State Library continues to hold Bradman’s archival materials, while this museum presents a selection of his memorabilia in a public setting.

Entry to the Bradman Collection is free, making it an easy addition to a visit to Adelaide Oval or a low-cost stop in North Adelaide. It should appeal particularly to cricket followers, sports-history enthusiasts and visitors interested in Australian cultural figures. The interactive elements and film footage also give families and younger visitors ways to engage beyond reading display labels, while the compact focus suits solo visitors and small groups.
