The Forest of Dreams

The Forest of Dreams is an art installation within Hurtle Square / Tangkaira, a public park in Adelaide’s south-eastern city centre. The square surrounds the intersection of Halifax and Pulteney streets, with Carrington Street along its northern edge, and is divided into four landscaped quadrants.

Created by public artist Anton Hart, the installation explores the contemporary landscape and the ways words can shape our understanding of public space. Its four words form entry points from the surrounding roads into the park, reflecting the separation between the city and the square while prompting thought about the location’s pre-settlement history. Benches alongside the work invite visitors to sit and consider their surroundings, while the artwork also connects the square’s four sections.

The park combines the installation with flower beds and Moreton Bay fig trees, including one large specimen that is a notable feature. It is open 24 hours a day, making it suitable for a quiet daytime visit, a short break while exploring the CBD or a solo pause among the greenery. Groups can use the open quadrants and seating as a simple meeting point, while dog owners are welcome to use the designated on-leash area, with dogs required to remain on a leash at all times.
