Somerled Wines

Somerled Wines is a family-owned winery and cellar bar in Hahndorf, Adelaide, offering a more intimate way to explore Adelaide Hills wine. Its limited-production bottles are available through the cellar bar and wine club rather than retail shelves, with tastings designed to introduce guests to the wines and the people behind them. Bookings are available, and visitors must be 18 or over to enter and purchase.

The range began with Shiraz and later expanded to Chardonnay and sparkling wine, with the family describing each bottle as shaped by the cool climate of the Adelaide Hills. Winemaker Rob Moody’s approach centres on complexity, maturity and balance, with a preference for patient, traditional winemaking. The website also highlights a barrel-aged Shiraz and a pale, bone-dry rosé, offering a sense of the considered style behind the label without turning the visit into a formal lecture.

Food is part of the cellar bar experience. Heather Moody develops and prepares many of the dishes herself, including anchovy sticks, warm gluten-free cheese puffs and croques monsieur. That connection between the food and the family gives the venue a personal feel: this is not simply a place to buy a bottle, but a space built around conversation, hospitality and a slower tasting experience. The cellar bar is described as welcoming and refined, with the family often involved in hosting, serving and sharing Somerled’s story.

Somerled’s history adds depth to a visit. Rob started the project in 2001 after a long winemaking career that included work with Wynns and involvement in notable Australian wine labels. The family opened the Hahndorf cellar door in 2010, and daughters Lucy and Emma remain part of the wider story, with Lucy involved in hospitality, menus, private parties and member events. The venue suits adults looking for a thoughtful tasting, a relaxed catch-up or a small celebration, while the Jockey Club offers customisable two-, four- or six-bottle deliveries every two months, tasting notes and recipes, member discounts, and access to a private club wine room and parties.
